Can ChatGPT edit videos? Yes, through a connector — here's how (2026)
ChatGPT can't cut video on its own. Add Vyra as a connector (MCP) and it edits your real footage: cuts, captions, music sync, and motion graphics on a real timeline.

ChatGPT can't edit video by itself — it has no timeline, no renderer, and no access to your footage. What it can do is drive a video editor. Add Vyra as a ChatGPT connector (built on MCP, the same protocol Claude uses) and ChatGPT can read your footage's transcripts and scene analysis, build a cut, caption it, sync music, and export — all on a real timeline you can open and adjust. Setup takes a couple of minutes and reuses the ChatGPT subscription you already pay for.
What ChatGPT can and can't do with video
| ChatGPT alone | ChatGPT + Vyra connector | |
|---|---|---|
| Watch or understand your footage | No | Yes — every clip is transcribed and scene-analyzed on upload |
| Cut and trim clips | No | Yes, on a real multi-track timeline |
| Captions | Script text only | Styled, word-timed captions on the video |
| Music and beat sync | Suggestions only | Adds tracks and cuts to the beat |
| Generate a video from text (Sora) | Synthetic clips | Not this — Vyra edits the footage you shot |
| Export a finished video | No | Yes, render and download |
How it works
- Add the connector once. The step-by-step is at How to connect ChatGPT to Vyra.
- Upload footage to a Vyra project. Vyra transcribes every word and analyzes every scene, so ChatGPT works from structured data about your actual clips.
- Describe the edit in your ChatGPT chat. "Find the strongest 45 seconds, cut the pauses, phrase captions, music under my voice." ChatGPT calls Vyra's editing tools and reports what changed.
- Open the timeline when you want control. Every edit is a normal timeline edit you can nudge by hand.
ChatGPT vs Sora vs an AI editor — which one do you need?
- You shot footage and need it edited → ChatGPT + Vyra (or Vyra's built-in chat). This page's job.
- You need footage you never shot (b-roll, product shots, concepts) → a generator like Sora or Runway.
- You want both → generate the b-roll, then edit it together with your real footage in an editor. Generators don't edit; editors don't hallucinate footage.
Do it in Vyra
You're connected to my Vyra project "october ads". List the assets, then propose three 30-second vertical cuts with different hooks. Wait for my pick before building.
FAQ
Does this work with Claude too? Yes — same protocol, same editor. See Can Claude edit videos?
Is this the same as CapCut's AI or Descript's assistant? Those assistants live inside their own apps. The connector approach means the AI you already use (and that already knows your preferences) is the one editing — you don't learn a second assistant.
What does it cost? Vyra is free to start; connector (MCP) plans start at $24/month on top of the ChatGPT subscription you already have. See pricing.
