How to light a talking head video at home
A window 45 degrees to one side, a white wall or matching lamp on the other, every other light off, and exposure locked on your face. Costs nothing.

You need one big soft light on your face and nothing fighting it. The easiest version is a window 45 degrees to one side, a white wall or a matching lamp on the other side for fill, every other light in the room off, and your phone's exposure locked on your face. This costs nothing and looks better than a ring light straight on.
Why it matters
Light decides skin tone and where the eye goes.
The method
- Find the biggest soft source. A window in daytime, not direct sun. If the sun hits it, hang a white sheet.
- 45 degrees off your face. Not straight on, not behind you. Slightly above eye level.
- Fill the other side. A white wall, foam board, or a lamp with a daylight bulb. About half as bright.
- Turn everything else off. Ceiling light, warm lamps, screen glow. Mixed color is the most common amateur tell.
- Add separation if you can. A small lamp behind you, off to one side, on your hair or shoulder.
- Lock exposure and focus. Tap and hold on your face until the lock shows. Otherwise the phone re-exposes every time you move.

Examples
- Daytime desk. Window camera left at 45 degrees, white foam board camera right, ceiling off, phone locked on my face. This is most of my studio videos, the window doubles as the studio light.
- Ring light done right. Off to the side at 45 degrees, dimmed to 40 percent, phone not mounted in the middle of it. Center-mounting is what makes the flat look and the ring in your eyes.

Common mistakes
- Window behind you. You're a silhouette.
- Ring light straight on.
- Ceiling light plus warm lamp plus window. Three colors on one face.
FAQ
Do I need to buy a light? Not in daytime. For evenings, one LED panel or a lamp with a daylight bulb.
Glasses glare? Raise the key higher and move it further to the side. Tilt the glasses down a bit.
