How to repurpose long-form video into shorts
Find a 20 to 60 second piece with a complete idea, reframe 16:9 to 9:16 around the speaker, add captions, and restore any missing context.

A short from a long video works when it's a complete thought. Find a 20 to 60 second piece that opens on a claim or question and closes on a payoff, reframe 16:9 to 9:16 with the face on the upper third, add captions, and fix any missing context with a short text hook. One 20 minute video usually gives 3 to 6 usable shorts.
Why it matters
Long-form takes hours and earns one upload.
The method
- Read the transcript, not the timeline. Mark 8 to 10 lines that make a claim, ask a question, or start a story.
- Check each one stands alone. Setup, point, and end inside 60 seconds. If it needs the previous 5 minutes, drop it.
- Start on the claim. Remove "so like I was saying" and any reference to earlier.
- Reframe to vertical. Face on the upper third, shoulders in. Two speakers means cut between them or a split layout.
- Add phrase captions. Podcast audio is mostly muted in the feed.
- Restore context. A text hook for 2 seconds ("Why I stopped taking commissions") or one bridging sentence.

- A 22 minute podcast about pricing art. Keepers, "why I charge by the day" (44 s), "the client who ghosted" (58 s), "my first sale" (37 s). Rejected, "as I mentioned earlier about materials."
- Context fix. The clip starts "and that is when she said no." Text hook for 2 seconds, "The client said no to Friday." Now it stands alone.
