How to edit a short-form video for retention
Win the first 3 seconds, put a re-hook every 8 to 12 seconds, deliver something before the midpoint, and end on the last useful frame with no outro.

People leave in three places. The first 3 seconds, the slow middle, and the moment they sense the ending. So I win the opening with a hook and an early cut, put a re-hook every 8 to 12 seconds, deliver part of the payoff before the midpoint, and end on the last useful frame. No outro, no fade, no "thanks for watching."
Why it matters
Watch time and completion are what the platforms push on.
The method
- Cut the first 3 seconds last. Once the video exists, rebuild the opening with the strongest line, a cut inside 1.5 seconds, and a text hook.
- Pay something off early. The viewer stayed for a promise. Give part of it before the midpoint.
- Re-hook every 8 to 12 seconds. Preview the next point, ask a question, change location, drop a word on screen. Rotate.
- Cut every "so anyway." Transitions like "moving on" are exit doors.
- Tighten the last 20 percent. Shorter shots, no summary.
- Stop on the last word. The frame after it lands.

Examples
- Re-hooks in a 45 second tutorial. 9 s, "and the second one is the one everyone gets wrong." 19 s, new angle plus the word WRONG on screen. 30 s, "this last one saved me an hour a week." 42 s, cut on "done."
- Two endings. Version A, "so yeah, that's how I do it, let me know what you think." Version B, "and that is why I charge by the day." B keeps 2 to 3 more seconds of average watch time on a 40 second video.

Should I loop it? If the last frame naturally matches the first, yes. Don't force it.
How short is too short? Under 7 seconds finishes well but watch time is tiny. 20 to 45 seconds works for most formats.
