How to pace a short-form video

Pacing is how often the viewer gets something new. Go fast, then slow for the payoff, then fast to the end, with a visual change every 2 to 4 seconds.

Pacing is how often the viewer gets something new. A cut, a move, a caption, a sound, an idea. Short-form that holds isn't fast the whole way. It goes fast, then slow where the real point lands, then fast to the end. A visual change every 2 to 4 seconds keeps the eye busy without rushing the content.

Why it matters

Retention graphs all look the same.

The method

  1. Map the beats first. The 4 to 8 ideas the video delivers, in order.
  2. Front-load. Hook, a cut, and a text element in the first 3 seconds.
  3. Slow down for the payoff. Hold the shot, drop the music, let a caption sit. Contrast is what makes the fast parts feel fast.
  4. Interrupt every 5 to 8 seconds. A punch-in, a b-roll insert, a word on screen, a sound, an angle change. Rotate.
  5. Cut on action or on the word. A hand moving, a head turning, a key word landing.
  6. Speed up into the ending. Shorter shots over the last 20 percent, end on the last useful frame.

Rules of thumb

FormatShot lengthInterruptLength
Talking head3 to 6 severy 6 to 8 s30 to 60 s
UGC hook and demo2 to 3 severy 4 to 5 s20 to 40 s
Montage0.5 to 2 son phrases15 to 30 s
Vlog2 to 5 severy 5 to 8 s45 to 90 s
Cinematic3 to 8 son swells20 to 45 s

The middle third should have the longest shots. If your middle is the fastest part, the value got buried.

Examples

Cut map for a 30 second talking head.

Do it in Vyra

  • "Re-pace this 45 second talking head. Keep every sentence but add a visual change at least every 5 seconds: alternate punch-ins, my b-roll clips, and single emphasized words. Slow down on the part where I explain the pricing and drop the music under it."
  • "Cut this footage to the beat of the track. Start with cuts every 2 beats, switch to every beat after the first chorus, and hold one long shot on the finished painting before the last section. 9:16, 25 seconds max."
  • "The middle of this video drags from 12 to 25 seconds. Tighten the pauses, add two b-roll inserts from my library that match what I am describing, and put a caption emphasis on the word 'free'."

Common mistakes

  • A cut every second the whole way. It reads as noise.
  • The same interrupt twenty times.
  • Fading out at the end.
  • Speeding through the payoff because you're worried it's boring. Slow it down.

FAQ

Is faster always better? Faster openings help. Faster middles usually hurt.

Where do people drop? Check the retention graph. Put an interrupt 1 to 2 seconds before each dip.
