How to build a video series that people come back for

A series is one premise, a numbered episode, the same opening every time, and a reason to watch the next one. It grows faster than one-off videos.

A series is one premise, a numbered episode, the same opening every time, and a reason to watch the next one. Someone who likes episode 7 goes looking for 1 through 6. It also removes the hardest part of posting, which is deciding what to make.

Why it matters

One-off videos compete alone.

The method

  1. Pick a premise that keeps going. "Every piece from my semester" ends. "Day N of building a startup" doesn't.
  2. Fix the opening. Same first line, same visual, same episode number card. Episode 12 should be recognizable in half a second.
  3. Put the number on screen. "Day 34" in the corner.
  4. End with the next episode's hook. "Tomorrow I find out if it dried."
  5. Keep episodes the same length. A series is a promise about what the viewer gets.
  6. Batch film three at a time. A series dies when episode 5 is late.
  7. Recap at milestones. Episode 10, 25, 50. A montage of the run so far.

Examples

  • "Day one of this next chapter with Y Combinator" is an episode one. The premise regenerates every day the company exists.
  • "One painting a week until I graduate" has an end date. That's fine, a countdown is its own hook.

Do it in Vyra

This is episode 12 of my studio series. Use the same opening as the attached episode 11: the same 2-second title card style with "Day 12" in the top left, same font and position. Then cut today's footage into 40 seconds. End with a text card "tomorrow: the reveal."
Make a 30-second recap of episodes 1 through 10 from these ten clips, one moment per episode, cut to the attached track, with the episode number flashing in the corner for each.
Match the pacing, caption style, and length of episode 11 exactly so this episode feels like the same series.

Common mistakes

  • A premise that needs a special event to make an episode.
  • A different opening every time.
  • Episode 1 twice as long as episode 2.
  • Quitting at episode 6. Series pay off late.

FAQ

How many episodes before it works? Usually 10 to 15 before the back catalog shows up in analytics.

Missed an episode? Post the next one with the right number and say nothing. Nobody minds a gap.
